a moment in my day

Last night Mindy Kaling said something that made me think about my dog, Ike.

She was talking to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, and Jon Stewart asked her when she found time to sleep.

Mindy said, "I have this thing where I don't want to be sleeping because when I'm awake it's so much more fun than when I'm sleeping."

Besides making my heart just about burst because this fabulously normal girl who is just an admittedly awkward comedy geek is living her dream, Mindy's comment made me think about one of the reliably great moments of every single one of my mornings.

It happens just after I wake up (which is usually on the 8th rendition of my iPhone alarm playing Suit and Tie, which is intended to pump me up in the mornings and just isn't really getting the job done). As I drift into consciousness, my bed is shaking a little bit, and it always takes me a few groggy seconds to figure out why.

And then I remember that I have a 55 pound dog with a powerful tail on my bed, and he. is. excited. about. life.

Finally! We're awake! I like to imagine Ike is thinking. Everything is more fun when everyone's awake! Think of all the adventures we can have today!

(of course, I usually narrate this made up thought process out loud, most likely making Y wish I would go back to sleep and stop conversing with our animal.)

Ike's enthusiasm inspires me every morning as I reach over to hit snooze for the ninth time, thinking that even Justin Timberlake isn't worth waking up for. But then I think, duh, yes he is WHY CAN'T I BE MORE LIKE MY DOG? I should be so happy to wake up every morning. Getting the chance to experience a new day is a privilege, dammit.

And then I usually hit snooze again. But making me think between snoozes eight and nine? That's quite a feat, dog. Well done.

Anyway, I think we can all learn something from Mindy and Ike. For example: Best friend is a tier, not a person (Mindy). Run away from your poop as fast as possible  -- preferably in circles around the yard (Ike). Why waste time sleeping when you could be awake, experiencing life? (Mindy and Ike, separately, although I imagine they would collaborate well together)

  1. Awww, I love posts about dogs. Mine is pretty much like yours. She gets so excited in the morning, and jumps over everyone to wake them up. She's my "moment" for today's challenge post :)

  2. Why can't we ALL be like our dogs! They're the best! I have to tear myself away from Ike's soulful eyes to type this.

  3. Mindy Kaling is absolutely fabulous and I truly admire her wit an drive. It's great to see women really making a stamp on the entertainment industry (as well as other areas).

Dogs are the best. Their energy is infectious and I'm never in a bad mood when I'm around one. Little, teeny things make them wildly happy. It's really the cutest thing ever.

  6. My dog's enthusiasm inspires me too, but not in the morning. See my dog sleeps all day while I'm at work wishing for a nap, so the fact that he is magically ready to get up when the alarm goes off does not impress me. Luckily we have a little guy - under 10 lbs - but he kind of hops around the bed 'quietly' waiting for us to get up. It's adorable except when he quietly hops on my bladder.

  7. I definitely have to agree - while Miley doesn't sleep on the bed with us, she does come over and stick her nose RIGHT in my face every morning and while it's annoying (not to mention wet), it still brings a smile to my face.

  11. What a great post! I was just thinking the same thing about my son, that babies and kids wake up happy and rearing to go yet somewhere along the line we lose the enthusiasm. Maybe it's because they are constantly learning new things and are excited to try?? I know when I'm learning something or have something to look forward to I definitely wake up more easily. Now just have to find out what exactly this mystery thing would be...

And I have officially fallen for Ike. Love at first sight.

  12. Ginger too! She jumps three feet in the air every morning when I see her for the first time. But she's not allowed in our bedroom, so nothing to directly guilt me if I'm feeling extra tired, ha.

And we just watched the Daily Show with Mindy (dvr - too late to watch live in our time zone!). Usually Peter fastforwards through the interviews, but I made him stop. Because I love her.
