crying over roadkill

I have a problem. Three, actually.

1. There are a lot of cars here.

2. There are a lot of deer here.

{this photo is actually from tennessee in 2008. i had to use an old image because in case you haven't already figured it out, spoiler alert, all of the deer in this story are DEAD.}

3. I get way too attached to animals, even if the only time I've ever seen them is when they're lying on the side of the road, no longer of this world. Which happens far more frequently in Minneapolis than it does anywhere else I've lived.

This, admittedly, has led to some tearing up on my way to work at least two times.

But the other day, on my way to Target, there was some full on crying going on.

Because first I saw a dead deer on the side of the interstate. And then, just as I was willing myself not to cry and telling myself the deer was probably killed instantly and without pain, Sarah McLachlan's "ALL OF THESE PUPPIES WILL DIE" came on the radio. At least I think that's what it's called.

Tears. They happened.

No enthusiastic Target lady could cheer me up that day. The gold nail polish, apple caramel swirl cinnamon toast, and chunky sweater certainly helped, though.

Not that I went to Target for any of those things.

  1. We should start a group, because I'm always tearing up over roadkill. It's terrible when I'm driving to my parents house out in the country - there are always deer (along with other furry animals) along the road. Especially this time of year. My only hope is that it was quick and painless for those animals.

    Although I must admit that I hate deer - growing up in the country I've hit 3, yes, 3 - although none of them died. So I don't hate HATE them, but I get really angry at them when they run across the road in front of me.

    1. I'm convinced my life would be ruined if I hit a deer. I can't believe you've hit 3!

  2. I have the exact same problem with crying over roadkill - I have been debating whether I want to tell you this one really horrible story - but I think I'm deciding not to - I don't want to make you start crying again!

    So - we decided that we were going to end up either in WI or MN eventually and then my husband got a job here and that decided it for us! We love it - and if it seems like I get out a lot it's because I work from home and HAVE to get out a lot or I would turn into a crazy lady who talks to herself all day! How do you like it up here so far?

      I love it here, too. Where did you move from?

  3. I'm always on the lookout for deer. Always. But, today a miniature dachshund ran across the street in front of my car and I was so confused. I was able to slam on my breaks in time - thank goodness, but I dread the day I hit a little four legged. I may never drive again.

    1. For some reason the mental image of a bewildered mini dachshund running in front of your car makes me laugh... in the saddest way possible.
